Arts Banner

At Juniata, art history, integrated media arts, museum studies, and studio art are combined in one department. It gives the faculty the opportunity and privilege to foster creative potential through interactions in the classroom, studio, and museum. Our Art department seeks to develop students’ understanding of how creative expression reflects and constructs the ideas, values, and histories of diverse individuals and cultures. Many Juniata alum and current students have contributed much to the important aspects of the multiple Arts they chose to diversify themselves in.

Instrumental Music, Academic and Performing Arts

At its founding Juniata College did not cultivate instrumental music. The first catalog in 1878 said simply, “We encourage our students to give their attention to vocal music in preference to instrumental.” The anti-instrumental sentiment remained an issue until almost the 1920s, when music professors were able to argue that classical music served as a better alternative to jazz. It was not until 1940, however, that students were awarded credit for their participation in instrumental music.
